QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Do I need to keep the scupper drain plug in or out?

When paddling it is always a good idea to keep the drain plugs at your feet out as this will automatically drain excess water that may enter the kayak from paddle splash or rain and so on. The Plugs are easy to remove so you can have either option. Having the plugs out permanently will not in any way change the performance of the kayak.

  • Do I need solid roof racks to transport the Bluefin, or can I use a soft rack setup?

This depends on how far and how fast you drive. The inflatable racks will work well but you will need to keep your speed under 100kms. Inflatable racks are great, but they are a temporary transport solution. Fixed racks will be a better and safer long-term investment.

  • Can I load the kayak onto my car on my own?

The Bluefin weighs 33kgs which is not very heavy but with that weight and its 12ft length transporting alone can be a little tricky as the kayak will tend to sway when lifting. You can however make use of a kayak load roller that attaches to your rear window with suction cups. The roller section allows you to roll the nose of the kayak onto the roof racks and makes loading a lot simpler.

  • What is the carrying capacity of the kayak?

The max carrying capacity of the Bluefin is 250kgs. The kayak operates at its best below 210kgs. When you are wanting to use any kayak keep in mind that any additional items you may load on the kayak will add to the overall carrying weight.

  • Is the kayak easy to use as a single?

Yes, the kayak is well balanced, so paddling is easy and the shape of the keel with its good tracking ability makes the kayak very agile and easy to maneuver even for a single paddler.

  • Can I use the kayak as a single?

Yes, by removing the two raised aluminum seats and attaching a soft padded seat to the center seat mold the Bluefin turns from tandem to a single-operated kayak. See question 1 for details to attach correctly.

  • Where can I use my kayak?

The Bluefin is suited for all waterways from lakes and rivers to the open sea. The raised nose along with the V-shaped keel (Bottom of the kayak) gives the kayak the ability to cut through choppy conditions with ease.

  • Why is there a drain plug on the kayak when there are no hatches into the deck?

The Drain plug is in place to drain off any possible water that may get into the deck of the kayak by means of the brass insert points or screws that have been used to attach rod holders and other implements to that hull.

  • Do I not need a rudder?

The shape and the design of the keel on the Bluefin are designed so that the kayak has incredible tracking, so no rudder is necessary. The keel acts as a rudder and you steer with your paddles.

  • Can I add a third seat to the Bluefin for my child to sit on?

Yes, you can add a soft padded seat that fits into the mold and connects to the D Rings on the front and back of the mold position. Once the straps are connected you can tighten up and shape the seating and mold it to fit your shape. Remember that the top straps clip into the forward D-Rings and the bottom straps to the D-Rings behind the seat.

  • Do I need to keep the scupper drain plug in or out?

When paddling it is always a good idea to keep the drain plugs at your feet out as this will automatically drain excess water that may enter the kayak from paddle splash or rain and so on. The Plugs are easy to remove so you can have either option. Having the plugs out permanently will not in any way change the performance of the kayak

  • Do I need to install stabilizers on the Bluefin or is it stable enough?

The kayak is very stable and doesn’t need the stabilizers, especially for paddling however if you are a fisherman and want to stand and fish the stabilizers will add stability to the kayak and keep it still and balanced in the water.

The roller section allows you to roll the nose of the kayak onto the roof racks and makes loading a lot simpler.

  • Can I put an electric motor on the kayak?

Yes, you can add a side motor bar that you can use to add and mount an electric motor. Keep in mind that the Bluefin is a single keel kayak (The hull shape under the kayak flows to a point meaning that it is V-shaped) so your motor size would have to be under 40lbs thrust or the weight and the motor thrust would cause slight tilt towards the side that the motor is mounted on. Using a motor under 40lbs will limit that weight and not affect the kayak’s overall balance.

  • What is the carrying capacity of the kayak?

The max carrying capacity of the Bluefin is 250kgs. The kayak operates at its best below 210kgs. When you are wanting to use any kayak keep in mind that any additional items you may load on the kayak will add to the overall carrying weight.

  • Always store kayak in a shaded area and out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not hang your kayak through the handles.
  • Store your kayak on the side with the weight evenly displaced.
  • Do not tie or try to secure your kayak through the handles.
  • To avoid warping, ensure your kayak’s weight displacement is even during storage.
  • Do not over tighten your kayak, especially in hot conditions as this can distort your kayak’s shape.
