The Ledgend of Vanhunks
In the 18th century, Dutch pirate Van Hunks enjoyed the stunning view from his favorite hill east of Table Mountain while indulging in his beloved pipe. His eyes feasted on Table Bay, Signal Hill, and a bustling harbor filled with valuable East Indiamen ships ripe for plunder. Though his pirate reputation was modest, Van Hunks excelled in pipe-smoking prowess.
One day, a mysterious stranger approached him, requesting some tobacco. Intrigued, Van Hunks engaged in conversation, bragging about his piratical exploits and his unbeatable pipe-smoking skills. The stranger perceived this as a challenge, and a smoking competition ensued. Smoke billowed as they puffed away, enveloping Table Mountain. Remarkably, Van Hunks held his own, showing no signs of fatigue. However, in a moment of frustration, the stranger's hat flew off, revealing a set of devilish horns. Unmasked as the devil, the fallen angel vanished in a sulfurous explosion, leaving Van Hunks breathless but victorious.
Today, the hill bears the name Devil’s Peak, and legend has it that the devil occasionally returns from the Netherworld for a smoke-off with his old rival. Despite his efforts, he never manages to win, as Van Hunks continues to reign supreme, with the mountain often shrouded in clouds when the southeasterly winds blow.
