QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • What are the Scupper plugs used for and do I need them on the kayak?

The plugs are in place to allow quick draining of water from the deck surface. Should water accumulate then simply pull out the plugs and the water will drain away as you paddle. If you are paddling in calm rivers and areas without wind chop or waves, then you can keep them in but in the sea and in wavey water we suggest removing a few to allow water to drain out.

  • Can I connect the foot pedals and the handle for the rudder at the same time?

Unfortunately, not. The rudder system is designed to work individually. If the foot rudder and the handle were connected at the same time and the paddler pushed to turn left with his feet and right with the hand rudder it would cause the lines to damage.

  • If I fall off, will I be able to get back on?

To tip and fall off the Shad is already an almost impossible task but in the event that you lose your balance and topple off getting back on is easy enough. Place your weak hand on the side handle in front of you then dip down in the water and kick yourself up with your legs and reach out and grab the opposite side handle and slide your tummy up and over the rail and then roll your legs into the kayak. Falling off kayaks can be a little scary as you are now in deep water and every badly made shark movie comes to mind. Just relax, take a breath and you will be fine.

  • I don't have solid roof racks, what can I do?

The Shad is a lightweight kayak in comparison to a lot of other models so you can make use of temporary racks such as the Self Inflating racks or the Rubber racks. These are both perfect solutions as their application and setups are simple as they have straps that connect above the doorline and secure in the interior of the car. Keep in mind that traveling faster than 100kms per hour or in high winds can affect the temporary rack's ability so keep to the speed limit and they will work great.

  • Can I easily transport the Shad?

The Shad is not a heavy kayak but its shape and bulkiness may prove tricky for some to load. Its width and high side walls may prove challenging to some but there are applications like Dollys that can make your loading and offloading much simpler. By installing the Kayak Load Roller on your rear window using the suction cups to connect you can easily roll your Shad up onto your roof racks as the roller action allows for the kayak to glide and by doing so takes some of the weight off the side you are lifting and therefore makes the kayak lighter and easier to lift. When applying the load roller then please ensure that your surface area is clean before application as a dusty area may cause the suction points to lose their grip and slip.

  • Can I beach launch with the Shad?

The Shad is quite a big and bulky kayak, and a beach launch may prove a bit tricky. The height of the side walls and the flat raised nose will make a bigger impact with oncoming waves as there is more surface for the water to hit. If you are wanting to look at a beach launch, then try to find an area where the waves have less force and are slightly smaller.

  • Can I mount a motor on the back of the kayak?

Yes, you can, At the back of the Shad, there are four brass inserts that are in place so you can attach a motor mount. The rear mount attaches to the kayak making use of the four brass inserts and the four T-Knobs that accompany the rear mount. Simply line up the mount over the brass inserts and insert and tighten the T-knobs. Once connected and installed you can attach your motor to the mount using the G-clamps to secure it.

  • If I want to at some point upgrade my Shad what drive options are there?

Our drive box designs on the Fin Drive and the Prop Drive allow for both to fit perfectly into the Shad by simply unscrewing the toolbox clips and removing the toolbox. Then insert the drive you want to use and away you pedal. Please have a look at our Vanhunks Boarding YouTube channel for instructions on the application of the Drives.

  • Can I adjust the seating?

Yes, the seating is adjustable forward and back by unscrewing the seat slider clips and moving the seat into the required position and then fastening the Slider clips into position to secure the seat.

  • I see there is a Fishfinder compartment, how would you install that?

Under the kayak, there is a nylon slated protection plate that can be easily unscrewed. When you lift off the lid you will see four brass inserts, and these are used to mount your transducer to the kayak. Once you have mounted the transducer you can run your cables up through the fish finder scupper port and onto the deck. Close the protection plate as this will ensure the longevity of the transducer beam as it will defend the beam from scratches. You can then decide when you want to mount your LCD screen and place your small lithium battery pack. A great place for the LCD is a rail mounting on the accessory rail as it is out of the way should you want to remove the Toolbox and replace it with one of the Drive systems.

  • Would I be able to stand and fish on the Shad?

Yes, you can easily as the shape of the hull was designed and based on the requirement for incredible stability and balance. The Shad has a triple keel which means that it has three points under the kayak that settle into the water, and this adds to the anchoring of the kayak as there are now three resting points so alleviating all tilt even for bigger paddlers making the kayak very stable.

  • The Shad is quite bulky, does this affect its speed on the water?

The Shad's overall shape and design were aimed more at creating a stable paddling and standing platform rather than speed. When you are on the kayak you will immediately feel comfortable. The Shad is by no means a slow kayak and can average around 4.6 km on smooth calm waters.

  • Always store kayak in a shaded area and out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not hang your kayak through the handles.
  • Store your kayak on the side with the weight evenly displaced.
  • Do not tie or try to secure your kayak through the handles.
  • To avoid warping, ensure your kayak’s weight displacement is even during storage.
  • Do not over tighten your kayak, especially in hot conditions as this can distort your kayak’s shape.
